Weeks passed, and the silence was surprisingly peaceful. I repotted the dying plant beside my window and finally hung my scrubs where they belonged instead of leaving them in a laundry basket. Months later, Chloe sent a short apology.
It was awkward and imperfect, but she asked for nothing. I answered kindly without pretending everything was repaired. Mom never wrote. I still loved them, but love no longer meant opening my wallet whenever someone called. I had learned something I should have known much earlier: an account can be closed without closing your heart.
