The Last TransferFor years, I had been the person my family called whenever something went wrong. So when Mom called one afternoon sobbing that Chloe needed emergency surgery, I did what I always did. I asked how much she needed, opened my banking app, and prepared to transfer the money. Then something stopped me. The hospital she named was St. Aldric General, where I had once trained as a nurse. I called Priya, a charge nurse I knew, and asked her to check the board. She checked twice. No Chloe. No appendix. No surgeon. No operating room. Nothing. By three-thirty, I knew the story was false. I drove across town and parked outside the steakhouse where my mother, sister, and her boyfriend were having dinner. Through the glass, I watched Chloe laughing over an expensive meal. Nobody looked frightened. Nobody looked sick. I sat there until the anger disappeared, leaving something much quieter.
At five-thirty, I walked into the bank and asked for every account connected to my name. Then I started removing them.
