When my brother Daniel asked for twenty-five thousand dollars to save his struggling business, I said yes. We had always helped each other, and he promised to return every dollar within two years. My parents urged patience, saying family should come before money.
I tried to believe them until Daniel admitted at dinner that he had never considered the money a real loan. My mother placed a paper on the table.
