The Quiet Weekend I Finally Learned That Kindness Without Boundaries Was Never Love And The Herons Still Came Back Home 2

I told Hannah I had been humiliated for two years, and had called it patience. I reminded her of the night she called from Denver. I had cleared the bedrooms, given Derek room in George’s workshop, added them to the credit card, and let them use the SUV. Somewhere along the way, help had become expectation, and expectation had become entitlement.

I told Hannah I would help them find a place and cover the first month’s deposit once, as a gift rather than a habit, if they agreed in writing to return the vehicle and close the card. She stared at me as though we had never met. By Saturday evening, Derek had carried his ladders and lumber out of the garage. For the first time in two years, I parked inside. I sat there with the engine off and cried quietly. It was relief and grief together.

Derek returned Sunday for the last of his tools. At the door, he shook my hand and said he was sorry about the card. It was not much, but I accepted it. Hannah did not hug me when they left. She only said she would call. Weeks later, she did, from a rented duplex across town. Her voice sounded plainer. She told me Owen had asked why she spoke to me that way, and she had no answer.
