The Quiet Evening A Mother Stopped Asking For A Seat At A Table That Never Had Any Room For Her3

Months later, a message appeared on my phone from Oliver. He had waited until no one was watching. “I’m sorry I called you that. Can I see Daisy on Saturdays?” I stared at the message for a long moment before answering. “Yes. Always.” Gregory later said he hadn’t seen the message. Maybe that was true. Maybe it wasn’t. For once, I didn’t need to investigate, argue, or wait for someone else’s version of events before deciding what mattered.

That evening, I sat on our small balcony while Daisy hummed over her dinner. The apartment was quiet, the kind of quiet that once would have frightened me. Now it felt peaceful. I thought about the group chat, the ring on the kitchen table, the years I had spent trying to prove I belonged in a family that kept moving the door. I finally understood that leaving hadn’t meant abandoning my family. It meant refusing to abandon myself. For the first time in six years, I wasn’t proving that I belonged. I simply did.
