The Empty Chair At My Father’s Table Taught Me What Family Peace Costs And What Walking Away Finally Gave Me2

Three weeks earlier, Caleb Hartwell had become chief executive of the firm where Vanessa and Ethan worked. Vanessa had spent those weeks desperately trying to impress him. He had never discussed his private life at work, and I had never asked him to. Now he looked directly at Vanessa and smiled politely. “Good to see you outside the office.” Ethan’s face lost its color. My mother opened her mouth, then closed it again. Vanessa finally understood that the man she had been pursuing at work was my partner.

 

 

My father slowly placed his knife beside his plate. For years, whenever family conflict appeared, he had looked around the problem instead of directly at it. This time, he looked at Vanessa. “I let this table decide things for too long,” he said. My mother stared down at the tablecloth, remembering the note she had once written: Family only. Those words had always been presented as a way of keeping everyone together. Now they sounded different. Caleb pulled out the empty chair beside me and sat down. Then he asked my father about retirement as casually as if nothing unusual had happened.
