I had built the foundation because someone had once believed in a girl carrying two suitcases. That belief became my life’s quiet purpose. He looked smaller without a room full of people around him. “I told you that you would become nothing,” he said, his voice low and rough. “I remember,” I answered. He looked down. “Your grandmother always said you would outlast all of us. I should have listened.”
I waited for an apology, but none came—not completely. And strangely, I realized I didn’t need one anymore. “I didn’t come here to prove you wrong,” I told him. “I came because Theo asked me to. And because a door that was once closed deserves to be walked through on my own terms.” He said nothing. For the first time, his silence didn’t feel like rejection. It simply felt like silence.
