Installation matters as much as the metal. The collar has to meet itself with no gap an animal can use, and it must not bite into living bark. Trunks thicken every year. A band left too tight can girdle the tree and block the flow under the bark.
Homeowners who use baffles near houses, sheds, or feeders are supposed to loosen, shift, or replace them as the trunk grows. A barrier that protects the roof and slowly strangles the tree has failed both jobs.
