Juniper had spent weeks preparing her class project about her father, Staff Sergeant Elias Reed, and his military dog, Scout. She wrote every detail she could remember, including the training scar above Scout’s ear and the way Elias called from deployment to help with homework. But Ms. Lindqvist rejected the project, writing “NOT VERIFIED” across the page and telling Juniper that a child could not know those things about a deployed Marine. Rosalind was furious. She demanded an explanation and made the teacher apologize, but the humiliation stayed with her.
Then Rosalind made a decision. If the teacher needed proof, she would get it. Elias arranged permission for a classroom visit. At 9:15, he walked in wearing his uniform, Scout beside him, and twenty-two children fell silent.
