The papers were medical records. Genetic test results, ordered when a baby is coming and parents need to know what might be passed down. Theo had contacted Garrett for family medical history because Marlowe was pregnant, and he realized he knew almost nothing about the father who had left when he was nine. It was practical, not emotional. But when Marlowe found the records on his phone, she discovered something that changed everything.
Garrett carried a gene for an inherited condition, and the family records traced it through his relatives. Then a comparison panel Theo had ordered showed something that made no sense. His markers did not match Garrett’s the way a son’s should. Garrett was not Theo’s biological father. I knew the truth.
