The venue cancellation was real. But I have to be honest about what my phone call did, because the version credits me with more than I earned. Fernwood Gardens was already going to cancel. The deadlines were missed before I called Coralie. My message only made sure the venue looked closely at documentation they might otherwise have extended again. I did not sink the wedding. I only made sure the consequences arrived sooner, and I chose to do it.

My parents’ ninety-five thousand dollars was gone. The deposit came back, but the florist, caterer, dress, and deposits were lost. They had drained retirement savings for a wedding that collapsed. I told myself I was protecting my daughter and teaching her that dignity was not for sale. Then Wren, seven years old, asked a question that made every excuse I had been using sound hollow.
