Today, the empty tin sits on my kitchen counter. I remember Mama as frightened, not cruel. Other mornings I remember being eleven, reaching toward the tin, and feeling the sting of her hand. The truth did not erase that memory, but it made it livable.
I kept the money, but also kept Mama’s final lesson: love can survive mistakes, yet silence can leave wounds that money cannot repair. Our story ended without perfect forgiveness, but with truth spoken aloud. I never forgot that. Again. I could finally stop wondering whether Mama had chosen me over money.
