After Mama died, I finally opened the flour tin she had guarded since my childhood. Inside were folded bills and an envelope carrying my name. The discovery sent me to First County Bank, where Manager Odell pulled a forgotten file from a cabinet. He explained that an accident settlement in my name had once been worth far more than our family ever admitted. Curtis, my stepfather, had secretly taken most of it to cover gambling debts. Mama had spent years trying to replace what disappeared, saving small amounts whenever she could.
I thought that was the whole truth until Odell placed another sealed page on the desk. He said Mama had written instructions about it before she died, and that I was supposed to read it alone.
