The Address I Wrote On The Card, And The Reason My Husband Feared It Would Come To This3

Silas apologized for what happened at the hotel. He admitted he had wanted me sitting near the front during his graduation, but other people had overruled him. Then he looked toward the old dock and asked if I would teach him how to repair it the way his grandfather had. I smiled and said yes. He was terrible at it, but I let him keep trying. As we worked, I realized that the thing Everett had wanted most was never simply the house. He wanted me to understand that I still had the right to choose what happened to my own life.

Wesley and I were not completely estranged. He still called, but I no longer apologized for protecting what was mine. The lake house would one day belong to Silas and Juniper, protected from anyone who tried to claim it early. Everett had recorded that message eighteen months before he died. At seventy-six, I finally understood it. I had spent too many years treating my own wishes like something I needed permission to have. Now, standing beside the lake with my grandson repairing the old dock, I knew the house was not merely something I had inherited. It was the place where I had finally chosen myself.
