I had not called the sheriff. I want that clear, because the story sounds like it should end with deputies and handcuffs, but I had arranged none of it. What waited in the driveway was much quieter. A locksmith had come the morning before. Every one of their belongings—suitcases, champagne flutes, boxes from the SUV—had been professionally packed by a moving company I hired and placed sealed and labeled beneath a tarp on the lawn. The locks were changed. The gate code was reset.
My family arrived expecting to move into the villa, only to discover they had already been quietly moved out. There was no confrontation and no scene. My father stood among his boxes and begged me to stop it. For about an hour, I felt the satisfaction I had wanted my entire life: watching him finally become small.
