The GOP-controlled House has passed the Detain and Deport Illegal Aliens Who Assault Cops Act, requiring the federal government to deport any undocumented immigrant who attacks a police officer. The measure, led by Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-N.J.), passed by a 265–148 vote, with 54 Democrats joining Republicans in support. Van Drew argued that individuals in the U.S. illegally who assault law enforcement officers demonstrate “zero respect for our rule of law” and should be removed from the country. The legislation mandates that such individuals be detained by federal authorities until deportation and creates a new category of inadmissibility for migrants accused of assaulting police officers.
After the vote, House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) criticized Democrats, claiming they had chosen to “protect violent, illegal immigrants over our brave law enforcement officers.” He said the Democratic Party had once again shown itself to be “the most anti-law enforcement party in history.” Republicans argued the bill reinforces public safety and respect for law enforcement, while many Democrats contended it was overly broad and politically motivated, potentially targeting individuals before due process is completed.
Meanwhile, a new CNN poll revealed troubling economic numbers for Democrats. CNN data analyst Harry Enten noted that despite months of Democratic criticism of former President Donald Trump’s economic policies—particularly his tariffs—Republicans continue to hold a significant edge on economic issues. According to CNN’s polling, Republicans now lead Democrats by eight points when voters are asked which party better represents their economic views. Enten also cited a Reuters/Ipsos poll showing Republicans with a 12-point advantage on which party has a better economic plan—an increase from a nine-point lead in 2024—highlighting growing Democratic weakness on the economy and reinforcing GOP strength among middle-class voters.
