Three weeks later, my father found me. He did not apologize for skipping the aisle. He came carrying a truth Rosalind had hidden. Her husband had emptied their accounts and left, and she was weeks from losing the house with her son. Panicked, she went to our parents. My father gave Rosalind their savings. Some had come from me: the eight hundred dollars a month I sent my parents “for the house” had been keeping my sister afloat.
Suddenly, his absence looked different. He could not stand before people and give me away while knowing he had spent my generosity on the daughter who had hurt me. So he stayed away.
