When Grandpa died, six cousins arrived expecting an inheritance. Instead, each received exactly one dollar. Della received nothing at first, only a small key and instructions to follow a dirt road with me. She thought Grandpa had forgotten her, until we reached an old farmhouse and found a locked box waiting inside. Inside was a folded letter in Grandpa’s unmistakable block print and a sealed envelope clipped behind it. I read the letter aloud while trucks pulled up outside. “Everyone else got a dollar because a dollar is exactly what they gave me these last two years,” Grandpa wrote. “You gave me Wednesdays. You gave me clean sheets and peppermints and my own story told back to me like it mattered.” Della covered her mouth as relatives crowded the windows. Then I reached the final paragraph and stopped, because Grandpa had written one last instruction that changed everything.
