Thirty Six Thousand Dollars Across Three Years, Explained To The Whole Town As A Disability That Never Existed

Pastor Dale thanked me because the church roof had been paid for out of my account, and my mother had stood at the front of the congregation and accepted the gratitude herself, and he had only learned the truth the week before when I sent him the receipt with my name on it. He did not shame my parents. He simply corrected the record, quietly, in front of thirty-five people who had spent three years believing my father was a disabled man being supported by a settlement, when in fact he was an able-bodied man being supported by the daughter he had just told he wished had never been born.

 

 

Then Aunt Winifred opened the envelope I handed her and read three numbers aloud. The monthly transfers. The seventeen thousand emptied from the account my father opened for me when I was six. And the date, one month before Corinne’s down payment. The yard did the arithmetic. Corinne’s house had been bought with my childhood savings, funneled through our parents, and she had either known or chosen not to ask.
