My daughter Sarah sent me a message at 9:45 on a rainy Tuesday night: “Mom, David and I need real distance from you. Your negativity and constant involvement have become too much. Please don’t contact us anymore.” I read it three times. Then I remembered the $1,200 mortgage payment and $450 car payment I had been making for them every month. I decided to respect exactly what she asked for.

I canceled both automatic payments, removed their phones from my plan, and sent one simple message: “No problem. I’ll respect your request. I’ll also stop the payments I’ve been covering.” I didn’t argue or threaten them. I went to bed. But by morning, my phone wouldn’t stop ringing.
