“When were you going to tell me?” I asked. Ben looked almost relieved that the secret was finally out. “Tonight,” he said. But he had applied four months earlier, interviewed during a work trip, and already accepted the position without asking what I wanted. He told me he was trying to give us better hours, fewer overnight calls, and more time together. His intentions sounded reasonable, but I couldn’t ignore the fact that he had made the decision alone.

 

 

“But you decided everything without me,” I told him. “You didn’t want my opinion. You wanted me to approve a finished plan.” I refused to move immediately. My career mattered. Olive’s school mattered. The life we had built mattered. For once, Ben couldn’t solve everything by making another decision for everyone. He had to sit down, listen, and understand that changing our entire future required more than good intentions.
