I Went to Surprise My Husband at the Hospital With His Favorite Lunch, but His Colleague Looked at Me and Asked If Ben Had Told Me the Truth3

Later, I learned Ben had negotiated fewer overnight shifts, better hours, and Fridays dedicated to Olive. His heart had been in the right place, but his method had hurt me. Oregon itself wasn’t necessarily the problem. The problem was that he had decided our future without including me. Eventually, I agreed to visit Oregon—not because Ben convinced me, but because I wanted to make the decision myself. I explored the neighborhoods, parks, and quiet streets, and to my surprise, I liked what I saw. That frightened me more than anything. Maybe the move could actually work, but only if it became our decision.

We agreed to wait until Olive finished school, protect my existing business commitments, and rebuild my career gradually. Ben even asked Oregon to delay his start date. This time, he wasn’t handing me a finished plan. He was asking me to help build one. Months later, in our new kitchen, Ben came home early and asked what he could help with. His phone buzzed, but he ignored a request to work Friday. I had work too, and instead of rearranging my life around his schedule, I accepted it. We hadn’t moved because Ben chose Oregon. We had moved because, finally, we chose together.
