By the time Arnold’s eyes filled with tears, I was still holding the lunch I had packed for my husband, Ben—his favorite sandwich, apple pie, and a note beneath the fork: “You don’t have to take care of everyone. Let me have a turn.” I had written it that morning, never imagining those words would soon become a lesson for me. “He’s leaving, Chelsea,” Arnold said, and my stomach dropped. Then he explained: Ben was leaving the hospital for a new position in Oregon.
We had been married eleven years, and I had spent most of them sharing him with his career. Over the past year, he had missed Thanksgiving, our anniversary, and our daughter Olive’s eighth birthday.
