For three days after the house went quiet, I believed I had won. Coralie was gone, the threats had stopped, and my home was still mine. Then my son Everett came to see me. He wasn’t there to apologize for his wife. Instead, he carefully asked whether I had thought about how difficult everything was becoming for everyone. I looked at his face and suddenly understood something that made my stomach turn. He already knew. Coralie had not planned everything alone. She and Everett had been discussing my house for weeks. My son had sat at their kitchen table and listened while his wife planned how to take the one thing I had spent thirty-two years protecting.
Then Everett finally confessed why. Coralie’s parents were drowning in a dangerous debt, and Everett had promised them that my house could solve their problems. His salary wasn’t enough, and my home was the only asset large enough to cover what they owed. He claimed his only condition had been that they wait until I was safely away, because he didn’t want me to witness what they were doing. That was his idea of protecting me. He had decided that stealing my home would somehow hurt less if I wasn’t there to see it happen.
