Julian relaxed when my father accepted his explanation. His shoulders dropped, and he returned to his dinner as though the uncomfortable moment had passed. But then I noticed the blue glow beneath the tablecloth. My father had taken out his phone and typed a short message. He said nothing. Dinner continued, but everyone seemed uneasy except Julian, who kept talking about work and his plans. Then his phone rang. It was his mother, Brenda. He answered with a smile, but within seconds his expression changed. “Mom? Slow down. What are you talking about?” He suddenly looked toward my father.
My father’s phone buzzed. He checked the screen and quietly turned it toward me. It was a photograph of the charcoal Toyota Camry outside a gas station near Brenda’s neighborhood. A tow truck stood beside it, and Brenda was arguing with someone holding a clipboard. Across the digital form were the words “Vance Surgical Associates Vehicle Compliance.” I stared at my father. Suddenly, I understood. The car Julian had given Brenda had never belonged to him. My father looked at Julian and calmly said, “You gave away a vehicle you did not own.”
