I did not slam the door forever. That was the version I told myself as I drove away, imagining myself as the person who had finally delivered justice. It lasted until Piper spoke from the back seat. She wasn’t crying this time. She was simply quiet. Then my nine-year-old daughter asked, “Are Aunt Corinne’s kids going to sit on an empty floor now?” Her question stopped me cold. Suddenly, I saw what I had refused to see all week. My anger was aimed at my sister and mother, but the consequences were about to fall on three children who had done absolutely nothing wrong.
I had been planning revenge because my sister had always been the favored daughter. I had finally found a way to make her face consequences, and I wanted to believe that made everything justified. But Piper had understood the truth immediately. Corinne’s children were innocent, just like my own children had been when family decisions hurt them. I pulled the car over, this time not to yell or make another threat, but because I needed to decide what kind of person I wanted to be.
