My Husband Said, Pay for Your Own Food So I Did Then His Birthday Dinner Exposed His Biggest Secret2

I pulled out my records. I had never calculated everything before, but the number shocked even me. In one year, I had spent roughly $8,700 on family meals and gatherings. Groceries, birthdays, holidays, football Sundays, and all the food Grant promised people without asking me. His family stared at him as the truth finally became impossible to ignore. His brother Miles admitted he had heard Grant tell me to buy my own food. Denise was furious that Grant had treated my work as though it didn’t matter while taking credit for everything I cooked. But then Miles said there was something else I needed to know. He told me I should look at the mortgage documents.

I went to the office and pulled out the paperwork. My hands started shaking when I realized my name wasn’t on the mortgage. Grant claimed his credit had been stronger when we bought the house and said he planned to add me later. But there was another document dated only eight months earlier. Grant had taken out a $96,000 line of credit against the house. When I demanded to know where the money went, he admitted it had been used to cover gambling debts. Then Miles revealed something even worse. Grant hadn’t simply borrowed against the house. He had already signed a contract to sell it. The closing was scheduled for the following month. I stared at my husband and asked where the money from the sale had gone. His answer destroyed the last bit of trust I had left.

“I sold it,” he whispered. The house I had spent seven years repairing, furnishing, and paying bills for was no longer truly ours. Grant admitted he had been gambling for nearly two years. There were also three credit cards carrying around $40,000 in debt and withdrawals from our joint account that I had never authorized. Suddenly, every financial argument made sense. Every time Grant had accused me of not contributing enough, he had been hiding the real problem. He wasn’t supporting me while I contributed too little. He had been drowning in debt while using our marriage to hide it.
