What I did not understand was that my cancellation would become the key. The family trip had been booked through Corbin’s nonprofit because Renata insisted they could get a group rate. When I canceled the reservation, I thought I was refusing to finance people who had humiliated me. Instead, I froze a transaction investigators were watching. The cancellation gave them the opening they needed. Renata bought her ticket to Hawaii, determined to have the vacation anyway.

 

 

Corbin had flown ahead with the children. When Renata arrived at the hotel lobby, she walked into agents who were there to question him. She called me that night screaming that I had destroyed her life over a grudge.
