For nine days, ten-year-old Bentley pretended everything was normal. He went to school and cared for his sister, Maddie. When I discovered water was shut off, I knocked. Bentley insisted they were fine until Mom returned, but I stepped inside and found dirty dishes, an empty refrigerator, and little food. I brought them next door and made grilled cheese. Bentley ate quickly before admitting his mother had gone to the hospital after collapsing. He had called 911, but nobody returned.
That evening, I called hospitals but couldn’t find her. Maddie cried while Bentley repeated, “Mama always comes back.” Then son arrived with eviction papers, unaware the children were alone.
