I was four months into my third military deployment when my fifteen-year-old daughter, Haley, sent me a message that immediately felt wrong. She rarely contacted me except to say she loved me or tell me about school. This time she wrote, “Dad, I need to tell you something, but I’m scared.” When I asked if she was safe, she said yes. Then she told me about her mother, Kendra, bringing different men into our house while I was away. Some stayed until morning.
Haley had been hiding in her room with headphones, afraid to confront her mother and afraid to burden me while I was deployed.
