I hid beneath my wedding bed on the night I married Owen because I wanted to surprise him. My satin gown was still on, and I was trying not to laugh when the bedroom door opened. But the footsteps belonged to Lorraine, Owen’s mother. She sat on the mattress above me, lit a cigarette, and called Owen on speaker. Then I heard something that made my entire body go cold.
They were discussing the condo in Savannah, which Owen had supposedly bought as our wedding gift. He had deliberately put it in my name, telling me it would give me security. Now I learned the real reason. He planned to wait until we separated, then use his receipts to claim the property. Lorraine laughed about how easily I could be controlled. Then Owen said my father was a nobody and I would be grateful for anything they allowed me to keep. I quietly reached for my phone. The recording was still running.
