After Mama died, I found a flour tin she had guarded for decades. Inside were cash and a sealed envelope with my name on it. I remembered the slap she gave me at eleven for reaching toward that tin. I had always thought it was cruelty, but I never understood why she was so frightened.
The envelope sent me to First County Bank. There, the manager opened a file Mama had prepared before her death. My accident settlement had been far larger than I was told. Curtis had taken most of it for gambling debts, while Mama secretly spent years recovering what she could.
