The two moving trucks were mostly theater, and I knew it before I arrived. My lawyer had warned me the night before that every roof, window, floor, and kitchen I paid to install legally belonged to Philippa because fixtures stayed with the house forever. I could not reclaim walls or bathrooms, no matter who funded them.
What I could take was everything with my name attached to the receipt. The refrigerator, washer, television, leather sofa, dining set, and bedroom furniture disappeared into two trucks while Philippa screamed from the porch and Desmond recorded every second on his phone. The neighbors watched without speaking, and I loaded nearly nineteen thousand dollars of movable property while leaving eighty-five thousand dollars of renovations behind.
