The door opened with a long, reluctant creak. Behind it was a narrow staircase descending into darkness. Mara hesitated, then took her flashlight and stepped carefully downward. At the bottom, she discovered a small room untouched for decades. Dust covered everything, but an old desk stood against the wall, and on it rested a leather-bound journal.
She opened the journal and recognized the name written inside: Elias Hart, the original owner of the house. The first pages described ordinary family memories, but later entries became stranger. Elias wrote about hearing footsteps at night, seeing lights beneath the floorboards, and receiving mysterious letters from someone who seemed to know every secret in the house.
Mara turned the pages faster until she found the final entry. It was dated three days before Elias disappeared. The handwriting was shaky: “If anyone finds this, do not trust the person who tells you this house is empty.” Beneath the sentence was a rough drawing of the basement, with one section marked in red.
Suddenly, Mara heard footsteps above her. She froze. Someone was walking across the attic floor. She quickly closed the journal and switched off her flashlight. The footsteps stopped directly above the hidden room. Then came three slow knocks on the floor. Mara looked toward the ceiling, barely breathing. A moment later, the wooden panel behind her began to move. Someone was opening it from the other side.
