The House and the Paper Trail……2

The receipt showed I had paid $8,700 for a roof repair three years earlier. As I searched, I found years of expenses I had covered myself. Then Travis called, insisting I was exaggerating everything. When I asked where the $40,000 from our account had gone, his voice turned cold. He said it was somewhere I had no business looking and warned that I would regret making things difficult.

I documented the call instead of answering his threats. Later that night, I found a cashier’s-check receipt for $27,500 payable to Hale Offshore Consulting LLC. I had never heard of the company. Evelyn searched the registry and discovered Travis had created it in January. Soon, bank records showed the $40,000 was divided among private accounts and the LLC.

The investigation revealed more. Travis had used household money for luxury purchases and tried to use my inherited property as collateral for a business loan. A title check stopped the lien because the deed remained solely in my name. I also remembered refusing to sign papers he had described as insurance updates. They had contained property-transfer and security-interest language.

When Travis returned home seventeen days later, he expected me to be frightened. Instead, I placed the trail on the kitchen table. Evelyn had uncovered the shell company, diverted funds, and attempted lien. Travis admitted he was preparing an exit strategy because he feared losing everything. The divorce took months, but the accounts were traced and the property remained mine. I opened accounts only I could access, learned my finances, and rebuilt my independence. Six months later, Travis apologized in my father’s workshop. I accepted that he regretted his choices without reopening the door. After he left, I returned to restoring my father’s table, grateful for the solid ground beneath my feet.
