I Slept With My Ex-Wife Three Years After Our Divorce…..2

A sealed envelope waited with her paperwork. In her letter she explained she left because she loved me too much to let me watch her disappear. She wanted me free of that shadow. When I opened her hospital room door and saw how fragile she had become, every leftover anger dissolved.

“You’re an idiot,” I whispered.
“I know,” she answered, eyes wet.

I brought the ring back a week later and told her twenty-two years could not be erased by papers. We never remarried and never undid the divorce. We simply reclaimed the time that remained—porch mornings, shared coffee, quiet arguments over the thermostat. The ring on her bedside table had never been a goodbye. It had been a question, and walking into that room was my answer: I’m here.
