Greg stared at the pages as though they belonged to someone else. The numbers were simple, organized, and precise, yet he seemed unsettled by what they revealed: for years, bills had been paid, accounts balanced, and responsibilities handled without requiring his attention. Stability had felt natural because the work maintaining it had remained invisible. He had spent years watching the system work without asking who kept it working, because comfort rarely announces labor beneath it.
When he asked whether something had failed to process, I answered calmly. Nothing had gone wrong. Everything had been processed exactly as intended. He looked up, finally seeing that I had stepped outside the role he had always expected me to perform.
