The twist tie on the church pantry bag had left a thin red mark across my finger, but I hardly noticed anymore. After years of quietly carrying burdens, small hurts became easy to ignore. I stood in my little Dallas kitchen—the same one where I had raised my son, David, after his father disappeared—and carefully folded the paper bag before tucking it beneath the counter. It was not shame that made me hide it. It was habit. The food from St. Mary’s pantry was simple—bread, canned peaches, powdered soup, and milk—but it stretched my budget through another difficult week. The volunteers never judged me. They simply offered kindness with gentle smiles and warm hands.

 

 

I often told people I volunteered at the church because I enjoyed helping organize donations. The truth was more complicated. Receiving help from people who treated me with respect felt easier than admitting I sometimes could not manage alone. Just then, tires crunched across the gravel driveway. Before I could gather my thoughts, the front door opened and David stepped inside without knocking. As he hugged me, his eyes drifted toward the folded pantry bag I had forgotten to hide completely.
