The Name Printed On Page Four, And The Slow Careful Year That Followed For My Son And Me

My mother. Dead eleven years. Nolan had used her name because it matched mine on an old insurance record and because he assumed no one would ever read page four. He had added her as an authorized driver in the second year of the lease so that Delphine could be covered without a credit check she would not have passed.

 

 

Emmett made the call. Nolan answered laughing, then stopped laughing, and the silence on that speaker lasted long enough for me to notice the clock on the wall. He brought the car in at 2:15 with Delphine in the passenger seat. Neither of them looked at me in the lobby.
