My Son Told Me to Leave If I Would Not Babysit for Free So I Walked Away and Took More Than Myself

The words came out before I could soften them. “Perfect,” I said. “I’m leaving. And you two can start paying your own bills.” Michael stopped chewing. Jessica’s fork struck the plate, while the twins froze. Only my sixteen-year-old granddaughter Clare looked at me, and in her eyes I saw something unexpected: pride. I had already packed my suitcase days earlier. Three months before, Michael had begged me to move in and help with his children. I sold my little house for $45,000 and gave up the life I had built with my late husband, believing my son when he promised I would have a real home with them.

 

 

Instead, I became their unpaid nanny and housekeeper. Michael and Jessica kept disappearing on supposed business trips while I raised their children and maintained their home. Then I discovered their vacations were lies. But Clare knew something far worse. She showed me messages between her parents discussing my money, the sale of my belongings, and a plan to convince me to sign power of attorney. They had never wanted me there because they loved me. They had brought me into their home because they had calculated exactly how useful I could be.
