The older officer crouched down so he was eye level with my son and asked him whether he had mowed a yard on Ridgeway that morning. Caleb said yes. The officer asked if he had noticed anything unusual. Caleb said the mail had been piling up for three days and the front curtain was open at a house where the curtain was never open, so he had knocked, and when nobody answered he had walked around back and knocked again, and then he had used the neighbor’s phone to report it and come straight home without telling me because he was afraid he had done something wrong.

 

 

Mrs. Alvarado had fallen on Saturday. She was found Monday morning because a thirteen-year-old noticed a curtain. She was seventy-nine, she lived alone, and she was in surgery while the officers stood in my living room. They had come to thank him, and they had come in two cars because the second officer was her nephew and had asked to be there.
