For six months, I believed my wife, Delphine, had walked away from our marriage. The divorce email from a North Carolina law firm seemed to confirm it. I buried myself in Northgate and let Desmond handle communications. Then Dr. Anand stopped me outside a hospital room and told me something that shattered everything. Delphine had listed me as the father and next of kin in her medical records. She had also left a note authorizing her sister to contact me directly if her life was ever in danger. She had planned for the possibility that I would never hear her.

 

 

 

Inside the room, Delphine looked at me and whispered, “I tried to tell you.” Then she told me about six unanswered calls, three voicemails, messages to my business number, corporate email, and assistant. Every attempt had disappeared into a system Desmond controlled. But the truth was worse than I imagined.
