The note on the refrigerator was how Harper found out. When Trevor finally returned with suitcases and souvenirs and asked why police cars were outside his house, I didn’t shout. I placed three things on the kitchen table: the child-endangerment summons, screenshots of Trevor’s messages insisting Eli was perfectly fine during the six days my son had been alone, and a canceled San Diego ticket. That last piece destroyed his entire story. Trevor hadn’t forgotten Eli or left him behind because of some emergency. He had refunded Eli’s ticket months earlier, kept the money, and taken his own two children to the beach. The funeral had simply given him a convenient excuse.

 

 

Eli had sent cheerful messages because Trevor had coached him to. “I already ate. Everything’s fine. Love you.” A nine-year-old had been taught that his hunger and fear were not important and that being a good boy meant not bothering his grieving mother. For six days, he fed himself with whatever he could find, eventually walking to a supermarket when the food ran out. Then Harper found Trevor’s handwritten note on the refrigerator. It listed the beach-trip dates and, underneath them, four words that changed everything: Eli stays. Tell A and M he’s at a friend’s.
