The Facebook post was the one thing my attorney told me to ignore until everything was finished. I listened. After the case closed, I made one post and nothing more. I included the deputy’s report, the demand letter, and one sentence from Winifred’s email explaining that she had watched my mother favor one daughter throughout her life and refused to allow that favoritism to determine what she left behind. I added no accusations and no dramatic commentary. The relatives who had called me cruel suddenly stopped talking. A few eventually called to apologize.
My mother has never met Wren. That isn’t a punishment I enjoy or something I use to hurt her. It is simply a boundary I refuse to apologize for anymore. I told her she could see her granddaughter when she was willing to acknowledge what she had tried to do. Three years have passed, and she still hasn’t been able to say it. Corinne and I don’t speak either. Grant contacted me once, months later, saying he hadn’t known about the emails. I believed him, and we left it there.
Wren is three now. She learned to walk in the same front room my family once tried to claim for their sons. The nursery I defended while recovering from surgery has become her big-girl room, painted in the color she chose herself. Sometimes I look around that room and remember how exhausted I was that first week, barely healed and terrified that I wouldn’t have the strength to keep fighting.
They arrived with a moving truck and a copied key, convinced that my exhaustion, my stitches, and years of being labeled difficult would make me surrender my own home. They mistook a woman who was healing for a woman who was defeated. Winifred had seen the pattern long before I did, and she had refused to let them rewrite her final decision. I simply finished what she had started. I stopped being the daughter everyone expected to move aside, and became the person who finally understood why my grandmother had trusted me with what she left behind. Four days postpartum, I held the line. I have held it ever since.
