Five Years Of Fake Business Dinners And Aspen Weekends, And I Never Once Asked Who Was Watching Me Do It2

The firm moved quickly. Within a week, my partners removed me from the business, explaining that they had to protect the firm and its remaining clients. The fraud investigation was referred to the appropriate authorities, and I was warned not to discuss the details publicly. Everything I had treated as proof of success began disappearing almost immediately. The penthouse was gone. The memberships were gone. The brownstone, which I had always considered part of my world, turned out to belong to Delphine. Her family had purchased it with their own money, something I had never cared enough to learn.\

Seraphina left the restaurant before I did. She didn’t wait outside, call, or follow me. She had liked the version of me surrounded by expensive dinners, accounts, flights, and luxury. Once that version disappeared, so did she. She understood the situation much faster than I did. There was nothing left for her to stay for. I had spent years believing money made me desirable, only to discover that when the money was no longer mine to spend, neither was her attention.

Delphine gave birth to our son in the spring. I wasn’t in the room. By court arrangement, I became a father who arrived according to a schedule, someone who received certain hours instead of sharing ordinary days. It was more than I deserved, but every missed moment still hurt. Delphine never screamed at me. Not during the divorce, not over the phone, and not in court. She simply gathered the truth with the same patience she used for birthdays, sick neighbors, and the cookies she brought to the office, then placed every piece where nobody could pretend not to see it.

For five years, I thought I had mastered deception. I believed comfort could replace loyalty and assumed Delphine’s kindness meant she wasn’t paying attention. I was wrong. My assistant had seen me. Desmond had seen me. My wife had seen me. Everyone who accepted her cookies and remembered her name understood who she was, while I was the one hiding in plain sight. I had mistaken being loved for being entitled to love. Delphine had been the only person who saw every part of me, good and terrible, and still chose to build a life with me. When she finally looked closely, she didn’t destroy my life. She simply stopped protecting me from the truth, and the truth did the rest.
