The first reports sounded almost unbelievable. Hikers exploring trails near Brownsville, Texas, described an enormous shadow gliding overhead, far larger than any eagle or hawk they had ever seen. At first, many assumed it was a trick of the light or a case of mistaken identity. But as more sightings surfaced, wildlife experts realized something extraordinary might be flying above the U.S.–Mexico border.

When specialists finally located the mysterious bird, they confirmed it was unlike any known North American raptor.
