He read the letter twice before the words finally made sense. Standing alone in his father’s dark study, Bennett had expected to find an inheritance waiting for him. Instead, the document explained that his father’s entire $4.6 million estate had already been placed into an irrevocable trust. There was nothing left for him to contest or negotiate. Every dollar had been assigned elsewhere: donations to the Alzheimer’s Association in Warren’s name, money for the county library where his mother had once worked extra hours, and scholarships for children of caregivers.

 

 

 

Bennett immediately told Adelaide she had been confused or manipulated by the attorney. He insisted Warren would never have wanted such a thing. But Adelaide quietly reminded him that during Warren’s final clear months, his father had repeatedly asked who had visited him. She had never had the heart to tell him the truth. Bennett had barely visited. Now, standing over the desk, he was beginning to understand that the fortune he thought he was entitled to had already disappeared—and that his mother knew exactly why.
