Inside the wardrobe was a little girl, maybe three, curled on a folded blanket with a sippy cup and a tablet playing cartoons on low. She was not locked in.
The door had no latch. She had climbed in herself, the way small children do, and had been crying because the tablet battery died and she could not work out how to fix it. Her name was Elena. She was my granddaughter, and I had never been told she existed.
