Corinne was only three feet from where the blade stopped. She woke to plaster, splintered pine, and daylight pouring through a wall that had been there when she went to sleep. Seeing my wife alive was the only reason I remained calm. I stepped outside wearing a T-shirt, keeping both hands visible. I knew exactly what Rosalind had tried to create. She had called the deputies and painted me as an armed, unstable rural man attacking an innocent contractor. What she didn’t know was that the deputies arriving nine minutes later worked under my command. The first thing they did when they saw me was salute.

 

 

 

The demolition order was forged. The county office named on it had never issued such a document, and the altered map shifted my property line eleven hundred feet. Corbin Vaughn, sitting pale inside his rented bulldozer, immediately handed investigators the messages and paperwork. He had believed the documents were legitimate. He had no idea the blade was about to tear through a bedroom with my wife inside. But those papers contained everything investigators needed, and once they were opened, Rosalind’s entire story began falling apart…
