Twenty Two Years In Uniform And A Photograph Of Me Shoved Behind A Spice Rack Where No One Had To Look

The name the announcer read was mine: Major General Delphine Ashcroft. For eleven seconds, the camera stayed on the podium while across town, three people who had once told me to go back to the barracks watched a nation finally say my name. Before the broadcast ended, my father called the lodging facility. I let it ring. My sister sent a photograph of the television with a dozen exclamation marks, as if my achievement had always belonged to all of us. Then came my mother’s voicemail: “Sweetheart, we always knew.” But they hadn’t. They had sold the car I rebuilt with my own hands, spent the money, hidden my photograph, and told people my twenty-two years of service no longer mattered because I was gone.
